Historic Nordic seaside hotel facade at blue hour

Nordic casino history

A reading list of dates you can check: operator pages, regulator lists and public corporate actions. Not a museum of Venetian legends or invented spa lore.

Why the Nordic record is short

Nordic land casinos are a thin public record, not four centuries of Belle Époque copy. Denmark’s modern hotel-casino licences cluster around a 1990 act of parliament. Marienlyst’s house history reaches back to a 1902 permission the operator still cites. Finland’s RAY casino opened in a hotel in 1991 and later left that hotel. Sweden built a state chain and then closed it. Norway never licensed the hotel-casino product at all. Those are the facts that matter to a traveller packing a bag from Bergen.

This desk does not retell Il Ridotto, Baden-Baden or Monte-Carlo as if they explain a night in Vejle. Those stories belong to other houses. Here, a date ships only when an operator, a regulator or a widely reported government action will carry it. Gaps stay gaps. A missing opening year for Aalborg or Aarhus is not filled with atmosphere.

1902 · Marienlyst, as the house tells it

Casino Marienlyst describes itself as Denmark’s oldest casino. The operator’s about page states that Crown Prince Frederik granted permission in 1902 for traditional horse-game play at Marienlyst — a lineage the house still cites. That is a house claim, dated and attributed, not a Nordisk Inspirasjon excavation of palace archives.

The licensed address today is the same coastal plot as Marienlyst Strandhotel: Ndr. Strandvej 2, Helsingør, with Kronborg on the neighbouring headland. Spillemyndigheden still lists the house. Evening hours the operator publishes start later than the Copenhagen tower. A 1902 permission is not a live table map, and it is not a promise that the current floor looks like 1902.

1880 / 1967 · Munkebjerg as a hotel first

Munkebjerg’s English hotel site dates the first house above Vejle Fjord to 1880 and the present pampering format to 1967. That is hotel history, not a casino opening year. Casino Munkebjerg is licensed at Munkebjergvej 125, inside the same forest hotel; Spillemyndigheden lists it. We do not invent the year the casino door opened. The useful fact for a traveller is the pairing: bed, spa and 18+ casino in one resort, a drive from the E45.

1990 · Denmark writes a casino act

Danish tax-ministry history notes that in 1990 parliament passed a law allowing licences for the establishment and operation of gambling casinos, including for foreign as well as Danish applicants. That is the legal hinge. Modern Danish land casinos are a product of that decade, not of a nineteenth-century Kurhaus culture imported from the Rhine.

Casino Copenhagen’s own company page calls itself Denmark’s first international casino. It states that the Ministry of Justice issued a licence in October 1990 and that the house opened on 31 December 1990. The same page notes a ten-year licence renewal from 1 January 2019. The licensed address is Amager Boulevard 70 — the same street number as Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, the late-twentieth-century tower the hotel describes as Copenhagen’s tallest.

Casino Odense states it received a Ministry of Justice licence in October 1990 and opened on 2 April 1991 — Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday — inside the H.C. Andersen hotel building at Claus Bergs Gade 7. Casinos Austria International is named as 100% owner on the casino’s guest information. The operator’s current claim of “more than 500 m²” is theirs, not a floor survey by this desk.

Five of today’s seven Spillemyndigheden land licences share a hotel building or plot: Copenhagen, Marienlyst, Munkebjerg, Aalborg and Odense. Casino Vesterport at Hammerichsgade 3, Copenhagen, and Royal Casino at Store Torv 4, Aarhus, are licensed casinos without a hotel pairing. We do not invent opening nights for the houses that have not published one we can attribute.

1991–2017 · Helsinki leaves the hotel

Veikkaus Group’s own story records that in 1991 RAY opened Finland’s first official casino — Casino RAY — at Hotel Presidentti in central Helsinki. In 2004 the operation moved to its current location on Mikonkatu, next to Helsinki Central Railway Station. On 1 January 2017 Veikkaus, RAY and Fintoto merged into one state company under the Veikkaus name. The venue trades as Casino Helsinki. It is a civic gambling room, not a hotel you book for the night.

That is why Helsinki sits on this history page and not on the hotel index. A casino that once lived in a hotel and then moved out is a warning label for itinerary planners, not a current overnight product.

1999–2025 · Sweden builds Cosmopol, then winds it down

In 1999 the Swedish government gave state-owned Svenska Spel a mandate, via the subsidiary Casino Cosmopol, to establish land casinos. Public reporting and Svenska Spel’s own communications describe four houses: Sundsvall, Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm, opening in the early 2000s.

A Swedish government proposition on winding down the state casinos records that Casino Cosmopol closed Sundsvall in 2020, then Gothenburg and Malmö in February 2024. Public reporting in 2025 described the Stockholm venue as the last house, then closed. Those buildings are not current hotel-casino products on this site. Do not pack for a Cosmopol night as if the chain were waiting.

Norway · the product that was never licensed

Lotteritilsynet oversees a national monopoly. There is no licensed land casino hotel in Norwegian cities. Bingo halls, hotel slot corners and ferry shops are not the same product as a Spillemyndigheden land casino sharing an address with a bookable hotel. Domestic gambling questions belong to the Norwegian authority, not to a Danish hotel page. Crossing to Denmark does not create a Norwegian casino; it puts you under a Danish licence and a Danish door.

2000–today · who watches the Danish floor

Spillemyndigheden’s own about page states that the authority was established in 2000 under the Ministry of Taxation. For its first decade it supervised gaming machines, the seven physical casinos and Danske Spil’s monopoly on betting and lottery. The 2012 gambling act partly liberalised the wider market; from 1 January 2013 Spillemyndigheden became a separate agency. Headquarters later moved to Odense. The public list of land-based casinos remains seven licences.

History here is a filter, not a souvenir shop. Closed Swedish rooms are not “coming soon.” Helsinki’s venue is not a hotel. If you need the live door policy for a Danish house, skip the timeline and open the casino’s own page from the matching hotel review. Method: How We Review.

The same dates, in a line

1902 · Helsingør

Casino Marienlyst describes itself as Denmark’s oldest casino. The operator states that Crown Prince Frederik granted permission in 1902 for traditional horse-game play at Marienlyst — a lineage the house still cites on its about page. Licensed today at Ndr. Strandvej 2, beside the strandhotel.
